Description
Ulysses S. Grant Autograph Letter Signed "U.S. Grant / General." Two pages, 9.75" x 8" (sight), Washington, February 25, 1869. Grant was exactly one week away from his inauguration as the eighteenth president of the United States when he wrote this letter to "W. H. Aspinwall & Gentlemen of Committee" regarding General William T. Sherman's new residence in the city, in part: "I had anticipated a portion of your request by having the deed to my residence in this city made out ready to be delivered to Gen. Sherman on his arrival. He will be here to-morrow. I can answer for Gen. Sherman that your generosity to him will be ever gratefully remembered. I none the less appreciate it as it is bestowed upon one of the most deserving, brave and generous soldiers of the republic." Smoothed folds, else fine. Framed with a portrait of Grant to an overall size of 14.25" x 9.5". With a second oval portrait of Grant, in uniform, measuring 4" x 5.5" (sight), matted to an overall size of 8" x 10".
Four days after his inauguration, Grant selected Sherman to succeed him as Commanding General of the Army, a post which he retained until his retirement in 1883.
