Description
Ulysses S. Grant Autograph Letter Signed "U.S. Grant." Two pages, 4.5" x 6.75", New York, December 12, 1882. Following his departure from the White House in 1877, President Grant and his family embarked on a world tour. Writing to Sir James Falshaw, Grant thanks him for his hospitality, in part: "Please accept the accompanying volumes as a token of remembrance of my very pleasant visit to Edinborough [Edinburgh] in the year 1877 and of your kind hospitality to my party and myself." With an engraved, oval portrait of Grant in uniform.
Sir James Falshaw, 1st Baronet, (1810-1889) was a British politician who trained as an engineer in his youth. He served as Lord Provost of Edinburgh from 1877 (the time of Grant's visit) until 1877 and as the chairman of the North British Railway Company from 1882 until 1887.
