Getting under weigh off the Battery, New York, Drawn by Charles R. Parson after J.E. Butterworth Lithograph with hand-colouring 1854, by the lithographer 455 x 600mm. (17 3/4 x 23 5/8 in) Unframed Constructed in 1851 to convey passangers across the Atlantic to the World Fair in London, Nightingale operated as a tea clipper for some years before being bought by a Brazilian company to transport slaves from Africa. In 1861 she was captured and armoured for service in the American Civil War. She later ran between California and China.
