May 30, 1770-Dated, Imprint, entitled “A Sermon Preached, May 30th. 1770,” by Charles Chauncy, Pastor of the First Church In Boston, Published by Daniel Kneeland, Boston,Very Fine.
“Trust in God, the Duty of a People in a Day of Trouble” is the title of this sermon, preached to a congregation still smarting from the recent Boston Massacre. The Boston Massacre was the killing of five American colonists by British soldiers on March 5, 1770. It was the culmination of civilian-military tensions that had been growing since royal troops first appeared in Massachusetts in October 1768 to enforce the heavy tax burden imposed by the Townshend Acts.
