c. 1800 George Washington Historical Liverpool Pitcher Includes “Washington With A Map of the United States”
c. 1800 George Washington Historical Liverpool Creamware Memorial Pitcher “Washington in Glory, America in Tears,” Also includes, “Washington with Map of the United States”, Choice Extremely Fine.
A wonderful, truly historic Liverpool Pitcher in exceptional quality. It measures 9.25” tall x 5.25” at its base. This type was produced for the American Market in England as a decorative George Washington Memorial. The first transfer is “Washington in Glory, America in Tears”, listed as “W.44” on page 207 of Armen’s book, “Anglo-American Ceramics” (1998). This “Washington in Glory” transfer has a portrait of Washington facing left, with his birth and death dates on his memorial obelisk. Lady Liberty weeps at the base of the obelisk, with the legend "America in Tears" printed below.

The second transfer, “Washington - Map of the United States”, is similar to W.15b on page 198 of Armen’s. This image shows General George Washington in his military uniform, holding a short staff in his right hand, standing next to “Liberty,” who holds a staff with a “Liberty Cap,” while gesturing towards an oval map of the Eastern United States. A winged angel blows a trumpet and carries a banner marked “Washington,” which indicates that this pitcher celebrates his military accomplishments as the Commander of the Continental Army during the American Revolution. Seated beneath two allegorical figures, “Wisdom” with her wise owl and “Justice” with her blindfold, and opposite Washington, is an image of Benjamin Franklin holding a book marked “July 1776”.

Under the spout is a “Seal of the United States” similar to S.12 on page 162 of Armen’s book. It shows a spread eagle with shield on it’s chest with rays and stars over the head and a banner in it’s mouth with the motto “E PURIBUS UNUM”. Also under the spout is a script style “CS” inside a ribbon and leaf border.
