The Ijaw inhabit the river and mangrove regions of the Niger Delta and the Kalabari clan inhabit the eastern regions; these “water spirits” are thought to control the prosperity of the tribe
This is a figure of a water spirit that was crafted by the Nigerian people of the Ijaw after 1940. The figure is carved of wood in the shape of a stylized saw fish. The fish has multiple fins on upper portion and sides of body. The open mouth shows the spiked teeth. The upper and lower portions of the jaw are lined with graduated ridges. The figure has polychrome pigments in red, green, blue and white. The Ijaw inhabit the river and mangrove regions of the Niger Delta and the Kalabari clan inhabit the eastern regions. These “water spirits” are thought to control the prosperity of the tribe.
The Ijaw water spirit figure is mounted on a custom stand. The figure is in good condition. The length is 110 cm. (tm)
