Christa Petroff-Bohne (b. 1932) was one of the most important formation designers of the GDR; this is a coffee portion pot and a cream jar for catering supplies of the typically reduced form

The design for the stainless steel series ‘ABS Rostfrei 18.8’ in reduced cylindrical shape originates from Christa Petroff-Bohne from 1959-61. The series served for catering supplies in hotels and restaurants. VEB Auer Besteck- und Silberwarenwerke were the executing manufacturer.



The two pieces bear the base mark „ABS Rostfrei 18.8 DDR“, additionally ’35 cl.’ on the coffee portion pot and ‘3 cl.’ on the cream jar. Both pieces are in good condition with slight traces of use. The coffee pot is 13 cm in height and the cream jar 4 cm.



Christa Petroff-Bohne (b. 1932)

Christa Petroff-Bohne began her artistic education with training as a ceramic painter in the Steingutfabrik Colditz AG. She studied at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Dresden from 1951 until 1953. Subsequently, the studies of formation at the Hochschule für Angewandte Kunst in Berlin-Weißensee followed. She worked as an artistic assistance at the Institut Angewandte Kunst in Berlin for a short period of time after graduating from university. She established the teaching field visual design at the Kunsthochschule Weißensee, where she was named a professor in 1979. Christa Petroff-Bohne was awarded the design prize of the GDR in 1984.



VEB Auer Besteck- und Silberwarenwerke (est. 1850)

The company Wellner was founded in Aue in Saxony as a manufacturer of cutleries and metal table dishes in 1850. Under the name ‘Auer Besteck- und Silberwarenwerke (ABS)‘ the assortment was partly enlarged between 1958 and 1992. A successor company produces parts of the previous assortment with a smaller workforce on the original machines in the nearby town Schneeberg since circa 1993. (tm)
