Description
Fired clay
Egypt, possibly Late Ptolemaic Period of ancient Egypt
Fragment of a terracotta of the goddess Isis, once nursing the Horus child
Dimensions: 4 x 3.1 x 2.2 cm (width x height x depth)
Provenance: Private Collection Bruno Wertz
Scientific research: Dr. Jan Moje, Free University of Berlin (see references below)
A comparable terracotta of Isis is located in the Akademisches Kunstmuseum Bonn (D 63)

This terracotta originates from Egypt, possibly from the Late Ptolemaic Period (1st Century BCE). The presented head of a woman has the hair parted in the middle. Remains of cow horns are visible on the head, which the goddess used to wear together with a sun disk as crown. The complete piece used to depict the goddess Isis lactans, while nursing the child Horus. Later on, in Christian belief, the image of Mary nursing Child Jesus emerged from this form of Isis lactans. Most pieces of such type appear in Alexandria to Memphis, Upper Egyptian archaeological finds have not been proven doubtlessly yet. The pieces were cast in one hollow model with the reverse remaining undecorated.

The terracotta is in very well-preserved condition, regarding the great age of the piece. The part below the breast is missing. Longer cracks are visible on the face and the back of the head that occur from the process of creating the terracotta piece. On the upper right of the hair is a piece of the surface of the terracotta chipped. The figure has been recently filled with clay on the interior to hang the piece on a metal rod on a modern perspex plinth. The dimensions of the head are 4 x 3.1 x 2.2 cm (width x height x depth).
