Description
DANIEL SICKLES (1825-1914) Union major general who commanded a brigade at Chancellorsville and Gettysburg where his rash advance in the Peach Orchard nearly caused a Union rout. Fine content A.L.S. 4pp. 8vo. New York Nov. 27 1892 to fellow general John B. Carr on the creation of Gettysburg National Battlefield. Sickles opens his letter discussing his son George Stanton Sickles who had fallen ill and remained quite weak. He continues: ""...The granite and bronze [?] in the State Memorial is all done. Zabriskie is completing the paths & approaches very thoroughly with broken stone...The monument...will be ready for final inspection by the Commissioners very soon...I wish you were in Congress with me. With both of us on guard...we could take care of the old soldiers...I hope to have the Gettysburg battlefield made a national park in charge of the War Department. This is my chief purpose in going to Congress..."". Very good. Sickles and Zabriskie would by instrumental in establishing the battlefield as a national park.
