Item Details
Description
OSKAR SCHINDLER FACTORY WORKER'S PIN AND ENAMELWARE Extraordinarily rare stamped metal pin-back worker's identification from Oskar Schindler's ""Rekord"" plant in Krakow used prior to the renaming of the plant at the very end of 1939. The 1 3/8"" diameter badge painted orange is stamped with the number ""75.33"". A few miniscule chips else very good. This badge was very likely worn by a worker prior to or even after the plant changed hands and came under Schinder's control. Schindler moved to Krakow from Svitavy in October 1939. Taking advantage of the German occupation program to “Aryanize” and “Germanize” Jewish and Polish-owned businesses he bought Rekord Ltd. a Jewish-owned enamelware manufacturer and converted its plant to establish the Deutsche Emailwarenfabrik Oskar Schindler also known as ""Emalia"" in November 1939. At its peak strength in 1944 Emalia employed 1 700 workers; at least 1 000 were Jewish forced laborers. In October 1944 Schindler commenced moving his plant to Brunnlitz in Moravia. From the same collection we include four enameled mugs and small pitchers all obtained in the area of Brunnlitz (pop. 1 400) just after the war. There is little doubt these were made in Schindler's plant. Although the plant was dedicated to making shells almost all were (intentionally) defective. These mugs bear very heavy enameled bodies with three different diameters and all bear much thinner gauge handles. It seems obvious that the mugs were constructed from rejected steel shells the bottoms crimped and tops flared as the steel used is much heavier than normal or necessary. Rare relics indeed.
