Granite Head of Princess, Ancient EGYPT
Granite Head of Princess, Ancient EGYPT
Item Details
Description
Possibly Ancient Egypt. Carved Gray Granite Stone. Portrays the Head of a Princess. Possibly Tell Al Amarna (Athetaten), Workshop of Thuturose. Possibly 18th Dynatsy, reign of Akhenaten (1350-1333 BC), Early New Kingdom (also known as Amenhotep IV), but selling it as "Age Unknown". Stated by the consignor it was brought to the US in the first half of the 20th century by his grandfather (a geologist, who worked for years in Egypt and Near East), so this could possibly be a Grand Tour item, which reflects the low starting bid. Most likely a portrayal of Meritaten. Statues with similar heads, but made out of Quarzite can be seen in Room 3 in the Collection of the Egyptian Museum, Cairo. All three are daughters of Akhenaten and Nefertiti, portrayed perhaps by the chief sculptor of Amarna, Thuturose and represent the young princesses very realistically. All bear the deformity of the skull, being unnaturally lengthened. Perhaps the whole family suffered from Dolichocephaly as the Pharoah himself had a similar skull. Portrayed with strict realism, lacking mannerisms and romanticising, common on previous epochs. This realism was favored by Akhenaten himself. Measurements: 7" x 6.75" x 4"
