Item Details
Description
A very heavy William Porter & Sons brass lantern with a cast PORTER globe. This lantern is very heavy. The base seems to be reinforced with extra weight. A most unusual brass tag on the bottom has HOLMES ELEC PROT CO / 238 DEVONSHIRE ST. / BOSTON. This is obviously a tag that was intended to be used on something like a key chain. The Porter stamping on the top is also unusual because they were using a die that had “& S” and then they stamped the word SONS after that with some separation. Neat. The globe has a long extended base (typical of Porter globes) and it has PORTER cast at the top. These globes tend to be narrow.
Who was Edwin Holmes: In 1858, Edwin Holmes founded the Holmes Burglar Alarm Company in Boston and became the first person to market and install alarms using electro-mechanical technology to detect intrusions, according to the CSAA.
