11" in height and 13" in width. A rare and desirable type of vessel incorporating a distinct figural type, from the ancient Jalisco region of Pre-Columbian West Mexico, circa 200 B.C. - 300 A.D. This represents a well-known, but rarely seen type of Jalisco figure/vessel, often described as depicting a "mourner". These are very distinct from other Jalisco renderings of individuals, in that the figure is always shown with their tongue protruding, and often the head has a ring-like shape on top. They typically have long, stringy arms, and are shown slumped over looking very despondent and lethargic. While this may depict a mourning figure, as some suggest, it may instead depict an individual with some kind of distinct illness or abnormality, since the features are very symptom-like and are so consistent for the type. The vessel is incorporated into the human form so masterfully on this example that it is easy to take for granted. But paying attention to the detailed volume of the body, and the way it seamlessly gives way to the vessel/container, it is a remarkable example of ancient art. This is one of those pieces that when the light hits it right, it captivates and really stands out amongst other things, drawing the viewer in for a closer look- it is compelling and exudes (and solicits) a great deal of emotion.
