Lithograph by Louis Maurer titled "Progressive Democracy - Prospect of a Smash Up", depicting the split in the Democratic Party. A carriage being driven by a Tammany brave ("A Squatter Sovereign") and President Buchanan ("Old Buck") stuck on the railroad tracks being pulled in opposite directions by Douglas & Johnson and Breckinridge & Lane. Lincoln and Hamlin are riding the "Equal Rights" train and are ringing the bell as a warning to the stranded Democrats [Sight: 13 1/2" H x 18" W]. Bears O. Rundle Gilbert Auctioneer label on bottom left corner of matte. Tipped to mount with archival tape hinges at top verso edges, uneven age-toning [darker on picture plane], and few margin stains.
