Description
Circa 1876-1878, the rod carries only the marking "H.L. Leonard/Maker" in two lines within the familiar shield, and "Bangor Me." below. Dating can be more precise as that particular marking indicates the arrangement with Abbie & Imbrie as Sole Agents was dissolved (circa 1876-1877) and precedes the William Mills Sole Agents marking. Butt, mid and one tip are full length, with the second tip down 3 inches, and having a 1 1/4" red silk repair wrap 2 inches below the top guide. Calcutta cane wrapped red with full intermediates and hanging ring guides, full nickel silver slide band reel seat, and patent date ("Pat. Oct. 26 75 / Pat. Sep. 3 1878" in two lines) spiked nickel silver ferrules. Grip is rattan wrapped with spiraled red silk. A very nice example of an historic rodmaker's work. Pictured by Hatton (pp 30-31). Original canvas bag. From the Thomas C. Kerr collection of Historic 19th century fishing rods.
