Description: Circa 1890s Archive of Margaret Mayou Brokaw, daughter of Reverend Joseph Mayou - Missionary to the American Arcot Mission in southern India. Lot includes multiple items pertaining to this important mission family; cabinet card photographs, ambrotype, and miscellaneous documentation. Brief online research along with vintage information included in the lot reveals that Margaret Mayou Brokaw was born in Arnee, India (near Madras) in 1865. Her father, Reverend Joseph Mayou, graduated from Rutgers University and the Reformed Church of America Theological Seminary. He entered the mission field and labored for 12 years with the Indian people in the Arcot Mission in south India. The Arcot Mission of the Reformed Church of America began in 1836. The mission built up an indigenous church in which the Indians had full membership and equality. By 1950, the mission claimed to have converted 35,000 Indians to Christianity. Includes identification on the images; Mudnapilly Native Christians in their usual costume Joseph Pahyana Nathan & family Native Preacher, Mudnapilly, India. Three high caste Hindu convert girls. Indians at table. (Notice the one on the end appears to be a dwarf.) It appears as though they have a Bible on the center of the table. (All cabinet cards are 4-1/4" x 6-1/2".) *There is one uncased, partial (broken) half-plate ambrotype (4-1/2" x 4"). The image appears to be a temple in India. *A twentieth century metal framed photograph of Margaret M. Brokaw. *Paper note hand written with Rev. Joseph Mayou's last messages for his children. *An old letter identified as being "written on death of one grandfather by other grandfather". Circa 1875 and signed, "J. Mayou". *Later 20th century copies of older carte-de-visite photographs which were taken of the Mayou children, while missionaries in India. (2-5/8" x 4-1/8") *Circa 1901 period ink manuscript sermon. (27 pages. 7" x 8-1/2") *Circa 1860 period ink manuscript sermon. Upper left corner, "Arnee July 1st / 60". Possibly written in Tamil language. (24 page. 6-3/4" x 8-1/4") *Circa 1857 Tamil language songbook. (7 printed pages. 2-3/4" x 4-1/8". *Funeral Register for Margaret Mayou Brokaw. *Also a couple article clippings, misc. photos, etc. This archive could benefit from further research.
Condition: occasional light surface soiling, dings, scuffs, edge wear including small tears.
