Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, north coast of Peru, Lambayeque culture, ca. 750 to 1370 CE. This is a black ware stirrup vessel with a strap handle decorated with a frog and a conical spout shaped like the head and headdress of a human figure. The figure wears enormous earrings that extend down to three dimensional additions to the rounded body of the vessel and holds its arms out to the side, each one holding some identical object that looks like a crab with claws extended. The Lambayeque were a people who did not shy from displaying their wealth; the elite wore tunics covered in panels of gold and tombs were stuffed full of beautiful and precious artwork, like this vessel, which may have been made for holding libations. The figure on the spout is almost certainly modeled on a wealthy noble. Size: 4.8" W x 6.55" H (12.2 cm x 16.6 cm)

Provenance: Ex - Private Virginia State collection
