Description
Pre-Columbian, El Salvador, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A hand-built ceramic bowl with a round but stable base, tall walls which form the deep basin, and a thick, lightly flared rim. The highly burnished surfaces within the basin are coated in cream slip with bands of brown and classic Copador red painted around the rim, and those around the exterior display a trio of abstract simian figures separated by 3 red balls. Four species of monkeys lived in the Maya region in Pre-Columbian times: 2 types of howler monkeys, the spider monkey, and the capuchin. These animals fascinated the Maya and are common subjects of their artwork, often depicted carrying valuable goods like cacao, symbolized by the red ball. Size: 7.7" Diameter x 4.3" H (19.6 cm x 10.9 cm)
