An enormous wheel-thrown pottery chalice with repeated black striations highlighting the shoulder and upper end of the flared foot and several panels of diagonal bands just beneath the rim, all against a buff ground. The Indus Valley pottery tradition extends back to the Neolithic era with hand-made bowls, jars, and vessels of various earthtone colors such as red, orange, brown, black, and cream. The Harrapan and Mohenjo-Daro cultures introduced wheel-thrown pottery like this example. A special example presenting a grand scale and a gorgeous silhouette.
