Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Guerrero Region, Mezcala, ca. 500 to 200 BCE. An abstract anthropomorphic figure, closest to type M-10, hand carved and string-cut from a pale grey stone with nice dark grey, white, and russet inclusions, standing with bifurcated legs and string-cut arms at sides with a characteristically oversized head, deeply undercut neck, projecting lower jaw, and square torso. The Mezcala sculptors brilliantly used string-saw technology to differentiate facial features and limbs. The figure's visage is characteristically minimalist with facial planes just barely suggesting eyes, nose, ear flaps, and open mouth, and the body is similarly reduced to simple, eloquent forms via this string cut technique. The result ironically appeals to a modernist taste for minimalism. Mezcala sculptural works are equally appealing for the inherent beauty of the stones selected by the ancients.
