Description
Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico, Guerrero region, Mezcala culture, ca. 600 to 100 BCE. A hand-carved stone figure of abstract form known as an axe god with string-cut grooves creating the anthropomorphic presentation. Scholars believe axe god figures were formed from discarded or otherwise unusable stone axe heads. Size: 1.1" L x 2.25" W x 6.125" H (2.8 cm x 5.7 cm x 15.6 cm)

Provenance: private Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA collection; ex-Minerva Gallery; ex-Benjamin Vega, California, USA, acquired in 2006 to 2007; ex-Gene and Virginia George, brought to the USA from 1961 to 1966

Large chips to along verso with small chips around peripheries and obverse, with light earthen deposits, and softening to some finer details, otherwise in very good condition. Nice preservation to abstract figural form. Previous inventory label on verso.
