Item Details
Description
Magna Graecia, Southern Italy, Apulia, Xenon, ca. 340 to 325 BCE. A classic trefoil spout oinochoe (also spelled oenochoe) with a bulbous yet elegant body and curved handle on a ringed foot, created in a pottery workshop in the Apulia region of southern Italy where potters were known for introducing additional pigments to black glazed vessels. The surface of this example of Xenon ware presents two decorative registers adorning the vessel; the shoulder displays circular, ovoid, and horizontal V-shaped designs, and the body features three large orange-tipped palmettes separated by four dotted vertical lines, each with a three-pronged terminal at the bottom. Overall, this vessel is a striking example that demonstrates skillful technique, an attractive painted decorative program, and a surface boasting silvery iridescence. Size: 9" H (22.9 cm).

This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated. A full report will accompany purchase.

Provenance: private Orange County, California, USA collection, acquired before 2000
