Description
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A thick-walled, cylindrical vessel of cool, blue-green hues, sitting upon a flat bottom, its surfaces presenting marvelous rainbow iridescence. An unusual form - simple yet elegant. Size: 5.625" H (14.3 cm)
The invention of glassblowing revolutionized ancient glass production, raising it to the level of the other major industries, such as pottery and metalwares. In addition, glassblowing made it possible to create a greater variety of shapes than ever before. What's more, the inherent beauty of glass as well as its other prized properties - the fact that it is not porous, translucent, and odorless - inspired people to change their habits, and replace pottery drinking cups with those made from glass.
Provenance: private Davis Collection, Houston, Texas, USA
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
