Description
Kakemono painting with colors on silk. Japan, late 18th to 19th century
Fudo means the ‘immovable’, he who firmly adheres to the healing path of Buddhist teachings and asks the god of death Yama for justice. In this painting, Fudo, or Acala in Sanskrit, is placed in the center with typical iconography, surrounded by flames, holding his khadga sword vertically and holding the pasha sling to catch demons. He is richly adorned with jewelry and his garment shows several emblems of the dharma wheel. Fudo has a grim, resolute expression, he sees everything – one eye looks up, the other looks down – and has fangs for teeth. Lotus blossom on his head, the figure next to Fudo is holding up another lotus blossom. Several demons in front of him, one with a khakkara staff; a hermit with a full beard behind him. High mountains in the background. The painting on silk is mounted on paper, with silk and silk brocade with gold. The gilded jikusaki show lotus blossoms. Inscription on the rear side.
Condition: Generally in good condition; some creases and one small tear to the mounting - one jikusaki missing and damaged futai
Provenance: From an important Austrian private collection, acquired before 1930
SIZE image 116 X 54.5 CM, SIZE mounting 174 x 66 CM
