Item: Nagamitsu Japanese sword Origin: Nagamitsu NBTHK papers Date: 1943 Materials: Steel Size: 66.6 cm nakago
Nagamitsu is one of the most famous names in the history of Japanese swords. There are several swordsmiths called Nagamitsu who worked from the mid-1200s until the 1940s. The best known of them worked in Bizen, although the name of Ichihara Ichiryushi Nagamitsu worked during the Showa era in the 1930s and 1940s. It has been established that Nagamitsu participated in the first Army Shinsakuto exhibition that was held in 1944, where he performed under the name Ichihara Nagamitsu. Nagamitsu lived in Okayama and is mentioned in the Tosho Zensho by Shimizu who lists him as a Rikugun Jumei Tosho (swordsmith recognized by the army) and as a member of the Rikugun Gunto Gijutsu Tenrankai he received the Kaicho-sho prize at a sword competition that Riku-gun Gunto Sho-rei Kai before the war held. (6) Some Nagamitsu sheets have a small "saka" seal on the nakago or nakago-mune. This indicates a blade made for the Osaka Rikugun Zoheisho (Osaka Army Arsenal). Several forges including Ichihara Nagamitsu, Gassan Sadakatsu, Kawano Sadashige and Kosaka Masayoshi made swords for the Osaka Rikugun Zoheisho On May 20, 1984, a Nagamitsu leaf was crowned with Shinteisho origami by the NTHK. Nagamitsu sheets have also received Hozon origami from the NBTHK in Japan. This testifies to the high esteem these magazines currently receive in Japan and the fact that they are judged as genuine gendaito.
