Archive of Documents Signed by Lincoln's Fellow Illinois State Legislators from Sangamon County Who Collectively Were Known as the "Long Nine"  Whig Abraham Lincoln served in the Illinois House of Representatives from 1834-1840. Carl Sandburg in his Abraham Lincoln: The Prairie Years (New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, 1926) wrote in Chapter 3 "The Young Legislator," in part, "The tall Whigs from Sangamon County averaged six feet in height, Lincoln the longest, and were nicknamed the 'Long Nine.' Riding the stage to Vandalia two days, they talked about schemes and strategy that would carry through the legislature the one law more important to them than any other, an act to make Springfield the capital of Illinois…" The "Long Nine" were successful; in 1837, the state capital was moved from Vandalia to Springfield. Abraham Lincoln and eight others represented Sangamon County in the Illinois General Assembly during the 1836-1837 legislative session. The nine consisted of two State Senators (Job Fletcher, Archer G. Herndon) and seven representatives (John Dawson, Ninian W. Edwards ,William F. Elkin, Abraham Lincoln, Andrew McCormick, Daniel Stone, Robert L. Wilson). Comprises: (1) [Archer G. Herndon]. Autograph Document Signed "A.G. Herndon / by William Herndon," 1 page, 7.75" x 3". Promissory note, April 26, 1830, "to pay Scott & Rule or Order" $376 in 90 days. "Attest Thomas Moffett." Endorsed on verso. William Herndon (1773-1842) filled out and signed his and his youngest brother Archer's names on this document. Archer's eldest son, William H. Herndon (1809-1891) became Lincoln's law partner in 1844, a partnership that was never dissolved. Fine condition. (2) John Dawson. Manuscript Document Signed "John Dawson," half page, 7" x 8". Sangamon County, March 12, 1833. On verso of a marriage license, certifying the marriage of "David Worley" and "Elizabeth Shingle." Signed by Worley, Shingle, and "C.R. Matheny C/C" as County Court Clerk. Browning at folds. Fine condition. (3) Andrew McCormick. Manuscript Document Signed "Andrew McCormick," 1 page, 7.5" x 12". Sangamon County, April 18, 1833. McCormick states that, in the case of McCormick v Glover, he "can not safely go to trial in this cause without the benefit of the testimony of Elijah J.T. Marley…" Also signed "C.R. Matheny C/C" as County Court Clerk. Minor flaws. Fine condition. (4) Daniel Stone. Autograph Document Signed "D Stone Atty to / Deft.," 1 page, 8" x 10". Sangamon County Court, March 4, 1834. He orders subpoenas for William Vaughan, Isaac Constant, and Josiah B. Smith in the case of David Glenn ads Peter G. Cowardine. Fine condition. (5) Ninian W. Edwards. Autograph Document Signed "N W Edwards," 1 page, 7.5" x 3". On verso of a Promissory note, [Sangamon County], September 25, 1843, "to pay to Ninian W Edwards or order" $108.18 within one year. Edwards pens "I assign the within note to Simpson F. Sutton without recourse Except that I am not to make a … to the cause until this note is paid." Endorsed "Simpson F. Sutton." Mary Todd Lincoln was the sister Ninian W. Edwards' wife Elizabeth. Lincoln married Mary Todd at the Edwards home on November 4, 1842; their first son Robert Todd Lincoln had been born on August 1, 1843. Light soiling in signature area. Minor flaws. Fine condition. (6) William F. Elkins. Partly Printed Document Signed "Wm. F. Elkins J.P." as Justice of the Peace, 1 page, 7.5" x 9.5". Sangamon County, December 23, 1854. Certifying the marriage of Abram Crowder and Martha Elliott. Witnessed by "N.W. Matheny Clk" as County Court Clerk. Fine condition. (7) Robert L. Wilson. Manuscript Document Docketed on verso of blank integral leaf "R L Wilson" as Recorder, 2 pages, 7.75" x 12.5". Manuscript "true and perfect copy" of a land deed originally filed July 1, 1837. Whiteside County, September 25, 1856. Docket, in full, "I hereby certify that by an order of the Board of Supervisors of this County Sept 1856 the within written certified copy was taken from the Records of Oglo County and filed in this Office Sept 23d 1856." Fine condition. (8) Job Fletcher. Partly Printed Document Signed "Job Fletcher," 1 page, 8.5" x 3.5". Sangamon County, August 16, 1858. Countersigned "Presco Wright" as Clerk. Affidavit that a witness attended court for one day :"and lives 14 miles from Springfield." Fine condition.
