Near East/Holy Land, Byzantine Empire, ca. 13th century CE. A pretty ceramic bowl made for domestic use; it has a decorated interior with an ornate glazed motif of diamonds and circles around a central triangle, each filled with spirals and swirls, against a buff pale red background. Byzantine pottery workshops that created glazed ware for domestic use based their designs on vessels made of silver or other precious metals.
