An interesting US militia sword of the 1830s or early 1840s. The straight blade is plain, not etched, and 28 inches long. The brass scabbard has floral engraving on the upper third of the obverse and a cast design in the drag. The pommel is a simply rendered knight's helmet. The grips are bone panels, diagonally channeled for the binding wire. The upper quillon ends in an eagle's head. The downturned counterguard has W-shaped symmetrical scrolls on the border and an American eagle prominently placed in the center.

Perhaps the most interesting part of the sword is its effort to imitate a chain knuckleguard. The quillons are S-shaped and the knuckleguard is noticeably thinner than the end of the lower quillon, notched, and given an extended, uneven bow that looks like a chain-guard at rest.
