James Monroe 1812 Signed Ship Safe Passage Agreement
Single page document signed on tissue paper, 7.75" x 10.25". Dated 'Washington City, August 28, 1812", and signed by Secretary of State James Monroe "Jas Monroe". Chip to lower right corner, with small burn mark to left margin. Not affecting text. Else near fine.
" … The public and private armed vessels of the United States are not to interrupt any vessels belonging to the citizens of the United States coming from British ports to the United States laden with British merchandize, in consequence of the alleged repeal of the British Orders in Council, but are on the contrary to give aid and assistance to the same; in order that such vessels and their cargoes may be dealt with on their arrival as may be decided by the competent authorities …"
