Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Schouten Island, Abelam peoples, ca. 1920s CE. A lovely bowl with a rounded base, rolling walls, a deep interior cavity, and a thin rim, hand-carved from the majority of a coconut. The exterior is decorated with a repeating decorative register of spiral, curvilinear, and triangular motifs, and the interior is coated in a natural rust-hued pigment to give it a burst of color. Covered in a light-brown patina, this is a wonderful utilitarian example from Abelam people! Size: 5" W x 3.5" H (12.7 cm x 8.9 cm).

Condition
Small loss to interior of bowl. One large fissure along the top. Age-commensurate surface wear and abrasions, small chips to rim, interior, and base, with fading to some carved details. Nice pigmentation remains within cavity, and light earthen deposits throughout.
