Description
This lot consists of an unframed watercolor illustration on paper, done in the romantic style of Winston Churchill (English, 1874-1965). A handwritten inscription at lower right corner reads, "W.S.C." Image depicts a bucolic rural landcape. Warm pastel tones populate the basin of this fertile valley. The artist has even achieved a great sense of depth within the scene. A handsome and enigmatic composition that would highlight any collection. This unframed piece measures approximately 5" x 8.5".
Reverse side of piece shows considerable wear and several stamps. One stamp reads, "Galerie Beyeler Paris". Another reads, "The copyright of this painting is the property of the artist and is strictly reserved". Winston Churchill is stamped in black ink. Further, there is a graphite inscription, "10/6", and a partially illegible stamp at bottom.
Winston Churchill (English, 1874-1965) was one of the most noteworthy leaders in modern European history, especially of the WWII era. Churchill was a politician, army officer, writer, and amateur artist who took great pleasure in painterly pastimes. He used the practice of painting to combat his own personal struggles, finding great peace and solace in creating serene images like the one currently being offered for sale.
