Description
This lot consists of an unframed oil painting on canvas, done in the romantic style of Winston Churchill (English, 1874-1965). A handwritten inscription at lower left corner reads, "Churchill". Image depicts an idyllic lake scene. The artist has even achieved a great sense of depth within the delicate ridges of the water and nearby cliffs. A handsome and enigmatic composition that would highlight any collection. This unframed piece measures approximately 16.5" x 19.5".
Reverse side of piece features a number of stamps, which read, in large part, "Winston Churchill". An affixed paper label reads, "Winston Churchill. 1874-1965". Another set of stamps read, "The Copyright of this Painting is the Property of the Artist and is Strictly Reserved".
Winston Churchill (English, 1874-1965) was one of the most noteworthy leaders in modern European history, especially of the WWII era. Churchill was a politician, army officer, writer, and amateur artist who took great pleasure in painterly pastimes. He used the practice of painting to combat his own personal struggles, finding great peace and solace in creating serene images like the one currently being offered for sale.
