Features twenty-eight full-page woodcut maps which are all in sound condition. Contemporary half leather and marbled boards. Tips starting to show. Front hinge cracked with joint also cracked halfway; rear hinge cracked but still feels solid. Minor scuffing to ends of spine. Marbled paper solid with only a tiny bit of wear to top board edge. Interior with occasional foxing but entirely sound. The first navigational guide to the Ohio and Mississippi rivers, with Lewis and Clark material appended. This vitally important work in helping to develop the commerce of the early United States, containing woodcut maps of the length of the rivers as well as an early plan of Pittsburgh, was the "most widely used guide to western waters in the early period both before and after the application of steam in 1807" (Howes). Of interest is the appearance in this later edition of an account of Louisiana and the Missouri and Columbia rivers as discovered by Lewis and Clark.
