Description
Grouping of Brownlow documents including two by the hand of W. G. ("Parson") Brownlow, one document signed by James P. Brownlow, and an 1865 Regular Session pamplet message from W. G. Brownlow as Governor of Tennessee. 1st item - Knoxville, January 24th, 1865 calling card signed W. G. Brownlow. 2nd item - Hand written response from W. G. Brownlow from a newspaper clipping stating that the Senior Editor of the Knoxville Whig, acting in his capacity of Governor, was not "too proud spirited and independent" to nominate his own paper to do the legal advertising. Brownlow's written response included the statements, "The Whig is the only paper published in Knoxville, loyal to the State and Federal Governments. Beside, the Whig is the only paper that has a circulation that justifies giving it the legal advertising...." A clipped signature is attached, "W. G. Brownlow". Note: The Whig was a American newspaper published and edited by Brownlow. 3rd item - Adjutant General's Office, State of Tennessee July 10th, 1865 document stating R. A. Armstrong has permission to carry arms for home defence. Signed James P. Brownlow, Brig. and Adj. General (James P. Brownlow was the son of W. G. Brownlow and previously served as Colonel in the Union Army before promotion to Brig. and Adj. General for the State of Tennessee). 4th item - 1865 Regular Session pamplet message from Governor W. G. Brownlow to the Senate and House of Representatives, Nashville, TN, 1865.

Items 1 & 2: Overall very good condition with slight wear to edges. 3rd item: Folds and overall toning. 4th item: Overall toning to cover and wear/losses. Inner pages with toning, especially to lower right, scattered wear/losses.
