I've had the pleasure of working with and buying from Palm Beach Modern Auctions for years. Always a positive experience. They consistently outdo themselves. Every year the stuff just gets more impressive. They don't have any hidden fees which is refreshing. Their buyers premium is consistent with other auction houses and their staff members are very friendly and helpful. When you buy, you arrange your own shipping but they have a woman who helps get quotes for you, etc so it's painless. I can't say enough good stuff about these guys.

I wrote asking for some kind of consideration after receiving an original, signed and numbered print, packed with zero protection, rolled against itself, in a plain cardboard tube. Rolled. In a tube. Again, this is an original, fine art print, so I was shocked. It should have been sent flat, or at minimum have had some layers of protective paper or glassine around it in the tube. But rolled? No protection whatsoever? A series of bad packing choices. Extremely risky for smudging or other damage, difficult to unpack safely, and requiring effort at my end to flatten the artwork. The auction house had kindly offered in-house shipping, for $60, which was comparable to outside shipping quotes, so I naturally assumed the service would be comparable. No. Not even close. I have no idea why the service was offered when it was so sub-par. I had directly inquired about protective layering in several prior communications. The owner, Wade Terwilliger, wrote me an email claiming 1) their shipping was industry standard (which it absolutely was not) and 2) they had done nothing wrong, and I should simply never purchase anything from them again. Instead of trying to make it right with a partial shipping fee refund, or even an apology, as a business owner might, Mr. Terwilliger instead chose to double down, denying his shipping department's negligent art handling, and turning away a potential repeat customer. I realize now that the other 99 % of purchases I make on liveauctioneers deserve rave reviews for thoughtful, competent art packing and professional interactions. Thanks, the rest of the auction houses. Steer clear of in-house shipping with Palm Beach Modern Auctions. The print is a beautiful one, but as I wrote to the auction house, I regret unknowingly putting it at risk due to simple and preventable carelessness in packaging. Further, I was surprised at the absence of responsibility taken by the auction house for these packing errors.
