Housing Works is the largest community-based AIDS service organization in the United States, as well as the nation’s largest minority-controlled AIDS service organization. Since our founding in 1990, we have provided lifesaving services, such as housing, medical and mental health care, meals, job training, drug treatment, HIV prevention education, and social support to more than 20,000 homeless and low-income New Yorkers living with HIV and AIDS. Housing Works also runs social enterprise businesses that raise millions of dollars every year to help pay for the services that we provide, spread awareness of our mission, and provide jobs to graduates of our Job Training Program. Our best-known businesses are Housing Works Thrift Shops, a chain of upscale thrift shops located throughout New York City, and the Housing Works Bookstore Cafe, a used bookstore, literary hub and concert venue located in Soho in downtown Manhattan. At www.shophousingworks.com you can Save more than just money on thousands of items donated by people like you to our thrift shops. Every dollar you spend helps us give a second chance to thousands of homeless New Yorkers living with HIV and AIDS. Where does all this stuff come from? Items on our website and available at online auction, just like the items in our stores, come from people just like you. We depend on your donations to keep us going. Thanks to the generosity of New Yorkers who donate to our stores, Housing Works Thrift Shops raise more than $10 million annually in support of homeless men, women and children living with HIV and AIDS in New York City. A pair of designer shoes that sells for $40 in one of our stores or online provides ten days worth of hot meals for a homeless HIV+ mother and her child. An armchair that raises $400 pays for two weeks of supportive housing for a client who badly needs a stable home. We welcome usable and resalable items including women’s and men’s clothing, jewelry, accessories, shoes, housewares, books and furniture. All of our locations accept donations during store hours. All donations are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law. We offer free and convenient pick-up service for furniture donations. Please be aware that our movers have been authorized to pick up items which they deem salable. Upholstered pieces must be clean with no stains, no tears and even-toned. Where does all the $$ go? All of the proceeds from our online sales goes to help us provide housing, health care, and supportive services to homeless New Yorkers living with HIV/AIDS. Learn more about at www.housingworks.org.
