review their shipping, they will not help you with anything
I won a few lots with this auction house and needed some assistance with shipping. They gave me options for shippers, and one came back to me with an estimate of £ 1, 816.22p-£ 3, 100.81 and the other came back to me with an estimate of £ 1, 321.84 after spending £ 192.00 on two lots.... as you can see, a bit excessive. I sent a few more messages after they received their payment and was NEVER RESPONDED TO. I work for an auction house and have always provided assistance, that's how we keep our customers. (even if it is a service we don't provide). Helping someone, especially in another country navigate a transaction is just the right thing to do for business... or is it? Apparently Cheffins thinks the opposite. Buyer beware.

recommended shippers greatly overcharge
I purchased a single framed picture. I've previously had a few similar framed pictures shipped from England for 35-60 pounds, and made the mistake of not getting a shipping quote in advance from Cheffins recommended shippers. I was quite surprised when these shippers quoted 200 and 285 pounds respectively and reported this to Cheffins. I asked if they could suggest alternative shippers and received no reply to these enquires (2 or 3 messages). I went with the lower est. shipper, and skipped insurance as the additional quote for that was 25 % of the cost of the item. They shipped the item a month after payment. It was adequately packed (standard box and packing material) and arrived safely. The actual UPS shipping charge on the shipping invoice was 54 pounds. It seems unreasonable for Cheffins recommended shipper to charge nearly 150 pounds to pick up a single item on a group pickup run to the auction house, wrap it simply and a month later post it via UPS. The alternative recommended shipper quoted over 230 pounds for this service and at least up front said it would be weeks before they could get to it as they were so busy. These pick-up and insurance fees are far outside the norm Ive encountered using Liveauctioneers and other sites over the years. It is so far outside the expected range that one wonders why Cheffins recommends them. (note-two weeks after this purchase I bought 3 pcs of antique porcelain from another English auction house that lot arrived 2 weeks ago-well packed and insured for a total cost of 40 pounds.) While I like the item I purchased the overall experience has been very disappointing, and Im chalking it up as a lesson not to use this auction house again.
