A Collector's Eye:The Lee Beltzer Collection
A Collector's Eye is anchored by over 135 works from the collection of Lee Beltzer, a Brooklyn College professor and longtime patron of contemporary American Realist painters. The collection is organized by genre: interiors by Philip Geiger, landscapes by Ephraim Rubenstein, still lifes by Amer Kobaslija, urban landscapes by Nicholas Evans-Cato, portraits by Dan McCleary, and works addressing gay life and the AIDS crisis by Anthony Viti. A few works are attributed to his friend and collegue Lois Dodd. Beltzer backed realist painters of institutional stature, in a field that received less commercial attention. The Metropolitan Museum of Art holds works from the same series as McCleary?s McDonald's worker and Viti's three Cross paintings. Several of the artists have shown at the Whitney Biennial and other museums, and with NYC galleries including Tibor de Nagy, Kouros, and Tatistcheff. Interspersed with the Beltzer collection are works on paper by Chuck Close, David Hockney, and Louise Nevelson; contemporary paintings by Malik Roberts; and antiques and design from New York homes. These include English and American 18th-century furniture, fine Persian carpets, French and Continental antiques, and Art Deco commission pieces by Pierre Chareau, Paul Frankl, and T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings. Seventy-five lots of fine jewelry, watches, and designer handbags close the sale as a single group.Bidder Reviews for Newel (22)
