June 2026 Vernacular Photo History Auction
Our June 2026 auction presents a focused and exceptional selection of historical photographs spanning the 1840s through the early twentieth century, with unusual depth in named subjects, rare formats, and documented provenance, anchored by strong vernacular material that rewards close looking. The sale's top lots reflect the breadth and quality of the collection. A CDV of Sojourner Truth, the iconic abolitionist and suffragist who sold her portrait to fund her cause, carries an estimate of $2,000 to $3,000 and stands among the most historically significant photographs we have offered. A full-plate ambrotype of tourists at Niagara Falls by Platt D. Babbitt, among the earliest commercial outdoor photographers in America, and a CDV of an acrobatic Black Civil War drummer photographed by J.W. Black of Boston round out the top tier. A mammoth albumen print of Iron Cloud, Omaha, Nebraska, and a CDV of Mark Twain by Gurney & Son, New York, add further named subjects of consequence. Western and performance material is well represented, including cabinet cards of snake charmers Lulu La Parke and Zelda, a CDV of the Halifax Murderer Wm. E. Sturtevant, a CDV pair of a man with a daguerreotype camera and Cole's Gallery exterior, a Prince Bendon ventriloquist cabinet card, and Civil War tintypes of a Zouave soldier with dog and two soldiers of the 114th OVI. A CDV of a horse and carriage at the Seamen's Hospital in Honolulu, Hawaii, offers rare vernacular documentation of the Pacific.
