Rare Aboriginal Breastplates & Australian History
Two extraordinary Aboriginal breastplates provide a rare and confronting insight into the early colonial history of the Bathurst region and the conflict between expanding British settlement and the Wiradjuri people. The first, an Early King Plate presented to Jacky Jones, King of Bathurst Plains, circa 1822, is believed to be associated with Governor Sir Thomas Brisbane and the Bathurst frontier conflict. Its distinctive Ducal Crown design reflects the formal style of early government-issued King Plates. The second, an Early Breastplate presented by George Innes to “Cap’n Piper’s Constable”, circa 1823–24, bears the names of prominent colonial figures George Innes and Captain John Piper and is directly connected to the turbulent years of the Bathurst War Together, these remarkable objects provide tangible evidence of the relationships, resistance and upheaval that accompanied the expansion of colonial Australia They are rare survivors of a pivotal period in Australian history and important pieces of early Australian colonial and Aboriginal history.Bidder Reviews for Smalls Auctions (16)

Friendly, helpful Auction House
Bought a lot from Small Auctions recently using the Liveauctioneers web platform. Easy to register and good detail and images provided. Communication with Small Auctions was excellent even though we are on opposite sides of the earth! Posting an packing was easy to arrange and very reasonably costed. Item arrived very quickly after the sale, safely packed and all as described. Very happy to recommend Small Auctions and would hope to deal with them again.
