Rare Australian Proof Record Coins
Smalls Auction Sale 345 presents an exceptional offering highlighted by two important ‘Proof Record’ coins struck by the Melbourne Mint. Chief among them is the Australian 1924 Proof Halfpenny PCGS PR64 RB, a year notable as the first time the Mint officially altered dates on Commonwealth coinage by adding the ‘4’ to all copper and silver issues. While commercial proofs occasionally appeared during the Sterling Currency era, true ‘Proof Record’ pieces were typically limited to runs of six for museums or distinguished recipients, making surviving unhandled examples like this coin extraordinarily rare and the sole finest known. Equally significant is the Australian 1929 ‘Indian Obverse’ Proof 1d PR64 BN, produced from the only ‘Indian Obverse’ die used that year to strike a small group of proofs and roughly 50,000 business-strike coins. This specimen also appears unhandled and sits uniquely atop the PCGS Population Report. For collectors seeking elite circulation strikes, the sale includes the Australian 1920 /./ (S) English Obverse Penny PCGS AU58 BN, the Australian 1925 Penny PCGS MS65 BN, the Australian 1931 Penny – Indian Obverse with Dropped Date PCGS AU58, and the Australian 1948 Y. (P) Penny PCGS MS65 BN — each the sole finest known examples. This curated selection represents the strongest offering of third-party graded Australian pre-decimal copper coins in more than ten years.

Friendly, helpful Auction House
Bought a lot from Small Auctions recently using the Liveauctioneers web platform. Easy to register and good detail and images provided. Communication with Small Auctions was excellent even though we are on opposite sides of the earth! Posting an packing was easy to arrange and very reasonably costed.
