Diane Cooper graduated From Eastern Michigan University with a B.A. in Fine Arts.

Diane has continued to study with artists from around the world. Most influential in her work was her five years in Japan studying Japanese calligraphy and brushwork technique. Her abstract paintings, often based on subjects from nature, concentrate on the use of the rhythmic line and marks made with bold color. Forming a strong and powerful impact, they expose the artist's joy for creating.

Since the late 1960's, Diane has exhibited at galleries and art centers throughout the world including in America, Japan and England. Her work was exhibited at the 1986 R.A. Summer Exhibition and can also be seen at The New Academy Gallery, Windmill Street and at the Chiltern Centre, Chiltern Street, London. Having lived in Asia, a culture much older than our own, developed within Diane a love for aged and worn surfaces. The Japanese aesthetic has been a major influence in her work. Layers and layers of canvas and layers of color are worked and reworked representing frustration, success, depression, elation and all other emotions connected with the creative process.

Diane's works include two series – “Shibui” and “Tobari”.

"Shibui" means handsome, good-looking in a subtle, refined manner in Japanese. Six-inch squares, each different, comprised of wood, metal, fabric, plastic, leather, and found materials fill a defined space in order rows. "Tobari" in Japanese means tapestry. Twelve-inch squares covered in an infinite variety of materials range in presentation from contemplative and minimal to chaotic and aggressive, creating a pulsating wall of diversity.

Other works: "My Subject is Paint." Using scenes or objects that interest Diane as a catalyst, the real inspiration begins with the application of paint. Freedom of line has evolved from the calligraphy and Sumo she studied while living in Japan. Creating an immediate image while conveying the intense energy felt is Diane's objective.
