Bisque refers to unglazed porcelain that is hard, durable, non-porous, and translucent. Unglazed white porcelain is also called bisque porcelain or biscuit due to its matte surface and texture. The Chinese were the first makers who produced fine shiny porcelain, also known as "China". In the mid-1700s, Europeans started to manufacture bisque porcelain, which was widely used in sculptures and decorative objects, such as small figures, large portrait busts and more. Bisque porcelain is characterized by an unglazed surface, matte finish, and a smooth texture. The two main achievements in bisque firing are the strength of the clay and the removal of the water.
