Modern Art

The auction contains 440 lots, including paintings, drawings, prints and sculpture spanning the 19th. Century, the Classical Modern period and Contemporary Art. A special section of the auction includes 124 works of art and other items from the estate of the Munich painter Ernst Klinger (1900 - 1962), whose oeuvre has been rediscovered in recent years by VON ZEZSCHWITZ, Munich. He was an important, but underestimated representative of Munich 'New Objectivity' ('Neue Sachlickeit') in the 1920s and 1930s and the abstract geometry of his later years belongs to the best that Munich art of the 1950s produced. The section includes paintings, drawings, posters, personal documents and even the furniture and easel from the painter's studio. The field of Munich painting is also very well represented by Erich Erler-Samaden and his 'Shepherds in an Engadin landscape' of around 1920, modestly estimated at 4.000 Euro. The main section of the auction is made up as usual, however, by works from the Classical Modern and Contemporary periods. Expectations are high for works on paper by Julius Bissier, Otto Dix, Karl Hofer, Alexander Kanoldt, Max Liebermann, Gerhard Marcks, Emil Nolde, Christian Rohlfs and others. The budding collector can choose from a wide range of interesting prints and drawings by Massimo Danielis, Rainer Fetting, Rupprecht Geiger, Joerg Immendorf, Konrad Klapheck and Otto Piene, all with estimates between 100 Euro and 1.000 Euro. Important paintings by Conrad Westphal and Helmut Sturm are among the highlights of the works of abstract art on offer. The Munich painter Barbara Bernrieder is just one of the representatives of the Contemporary art selection and her tense colour compositions are certain to find new homes. An interesting selection of sculpture and sculptural forms by Imi Knoebel, Dietrich Klinge, Michael Schoenholtz and Albert Ricken form a satisfyingly varied contribution to an auction of many faceted quality.
