The Silk Road: Orientalist Paintings and Furniture from a Belgravia Residence
Sotheby’s is proud to present for sale the contents of a Belgravia residence reuniting an impressive group of Orientalist paintings and 18th century furniture and decorative arts.
The Orientalist paintings in this collection form an exceptional group, and a panoptic picture of the Islamic lands (North Africa, the Middle East and Ottoman Turkey) as they looked a century or more ago, from when few other visual records survive. Among the highlights of the collection are Jean-Joseph Benjamin-Constant’s Odalisque, a sumptuous interior focusing on domestic life and the female space; Théodore Gudin’s majestic View of the Golden Horn, Constantinople; and Rudolf Ernst’s The Sheikh’s Comforts and female Orientalist Marie Lucas-Robiquet’s Taking Refreshment in Ain-Sefra, Algeria. Together, the paintings create a rich and warm tapestry of place, colour, texture, and expression, a reflection of Western artists’ fascination for, and engagement with, the cultures they encountered on their travels.
The decorative arts in the collection are a testament to this collection’s passion for French 18th century furniture, especially from the Louis XV and Louis XVI reigns, and perfectly complement the Orientalist paintings. Represented are some of the greatest names in Parisian ébénisterie and menuiserie – including Jean-Henri Riesener, Jean-Baptiste Tilliard, Bernard van Risenburgh and Roger Vandercruse – who not only produced pieces of unsurpassed quality but also revolutionised interior space and living, with this period being called by some ‘The Age of Comfort’.
