The Pleasure of Objects: The Ian & Carolina Irving Collection
Sotheby’s is pleased to be offering, The Pleasure of Objects: The Ian and Carolina Irving Collection this January during Old Master’s Week. Objects from this collection were never hidden in cupboards but out on display and always in use. A summer lunch at this East Hampton home was served outside on white tablecloths set with white and gilt silver catching the afternoon sun surrounded by a background of lawns and tall grasses. Dinner inside would be a candle-lit presentation rotating between settings of German 17th century silver-gilt with the emphasis on diamond pattern and repeated hearts one night, to all an English setting the following night, the display centered by a superb, covered cup to a design by William Kent, the food served on plates designed by Robert Adam, while on the wall glinted chargers designed by Pugin.
Some guests were privileged to experience a Royal and Imperial night, with the emphasis on the courts of Hanover and London, with a glimpse of a tapestry of Queen Anne nearby, the wine bottles sitting in gilded coasters from the Borghese Palace, on a side table a pair of tazze with the arms of the Doge of Venice, bought from the famous Mentmore sale. While other visitors might be treated to candelabra from Cadiz mixed with chargers from Portugal, Alto Peru, and Guatemala, all overseen by an early 19th century Mexican beauty in a frame nearby. While greatly loved, these treasures will now be available for a new generation to enjoy.
