Travel Posters

Travel posters emerged in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as a fusion of art and advertising, promoting railways, steamships, airlines, and global destinations through bold design. Influenced first by Art Nouveau and later defined by the geometric clarity of Art Deco, artists like A.M. Cassandre, Jean Carlu, and Roger Broders elevated the form with striking compositions and modern typography. Postwar designers expanded the style with brighter colors and larger type, capturing the excitement of air travel while shaping how audiences imagined distant places.

PAI's debut Travel Posters auction on May 20th celebrates this lively medium with works by Charles-Leonce Brosse, Paul Colin, Lucien Boucher, Sergei Sakharov, Nikolai Strekalovsky, Norman Wilkinson, Nembhard N. Culin, Leslie Ragan, Edward Eggleston, Stan Galli, David Klein, and several others. Over sixty works from the Seymour Stein Collection are featured at the start of the catalog.
