Florida Highwaymen and American Art Fireworks

Florida Highwaymen & Backus: The Art of Light brings together an exceptional selection of Florida art spanning the celebrated Florida Highwaymen, A. E. Backus and his students, important Florida landscape painters, outsider artists, and regional masters whose work helped define the visual identity of the Sunshine State. At the heart of the auction is a carefully curated group of Florida Highwaymen paintings featuring significant works by Harold Newton, Alfred Hair, Mary Ann Carroll, Sam Newton, Johnny Daniels, Willie Daniels, James Gibson, Al Black, Rodney Demps, Roy McLendon, Sylvester Wells, R. L. Lewis, Lemuel Newton, Curtis Arnette, Livingston Roberts, Hezekiah Baker, and others. Collectors will find many of the subjects most coveted within the Highwaymen tradition, including rare jacarandas, luminous moonlight scenes, dramatic Rio Mar beaches, St. Lucie River landscapes, glowing backwaters, poincianas in full bloom, homestead scenes, and atmospheric nocturnes. A major highlight of the sale is an important group of works connected to A. E. Backus, including original paintings by the Florida master himself and exceptional examples by students and followers who carried his influence forward. Featured artists include Therese Knowles, James Hutchinson, Jackie Schindehette, Bruce Tomlin, and others whose work reflects the rich artistic lineage that emerged from Backus' studio and mentorship. Beyond the Highwaymen and Backus tradition, the auction expands into a broader celebration of American and Florida art. Additional offerings include outsider art, African American art, original paintings, watercolors, etchings, folk art, coastal scenes, wildlife subjects, and regional landscapes. Collectors will encounter works ranging from colorful narrative compositions and expressive folk imagery to refined impressionistic river scenes and finely executed coastal views. Throughout the catalog, recurring themes of light, atmosphere, and place unite the collection. From glowing
