The Costume Department Auction
Mary Jane Reyner’s fabulous `Costume Department’, responsible for supplying vintage clothing and accessories to numerous film, theatre productions, TV shows and advertisements over the past ten years is closing down. Mary Jane wishes to concentrate on designing which is her first love and so all the wonderful men’s, women’s and children’s gowns, suits, hats, shoes, knitwear, ball gowns, sunglasses etc she has collected over the years for design inspiration and for hire will go under the hammer. In this unique sale the auction will take place on site where Kerry Taylor will wield her gavel. The lots are grouped to appeal private collectors, buyers who wish to buy-to-wear, as well as the trade and Lot 2120 are displayed over 150 rails plus countless boxes and bags of wonderful accessories. This sale amounts to an Aladdin’s cave of delights for fashionistas and costume designers alike. The clothes and accessories date from the 1940s onwards but are particularly strong in groovy sixties and seventies garments. The 374 lots range from the mundane (nurses outfits, school uniforms) through to the fabulous – bejewelled evening gowns by Norman Hartnell with estimates from £100 upwards.
