Summer Fine Art Auction
We are excited to present our Summer Fine Art Auction on June 8th at 10am. This auction will be live in house with online bidding available. The auction is filled to the brim with elegant Galle pieces to Seiji Ozawa estate ephemera and notable articles. The showstopping Galle piece of this auction is an incredible curved glass display case with marquetry inlay botanical elements from a Cranston, Rhode Island estate. Along with the showcase are three stunning nesting tables of botanical marquetry also by Galle, and of course the glass pieces are not to be ignored. There is a beautiful squat vase akin to stained glass depicting a forest scene along a river that can only truly be appreciated when the piece is backlit. Galle was trained in art, botany, and chemistry, which is reflected in many of his works. He began his career by working at Burgun, Schverer et Cie in Meisenthal before setting up his own glass company in 1873 where he decorated glass with enamel. It wasn't until the 1878 International Exhibition in Paris where he was exposed to cameo glass created by his contemporaries John Northwood, Joseph Locke, and Eugene Rousseau. By the 1889 Paris International Exhibition, Galle displayed his new glass works including his carved cameo glass pieces which earned him recognition in the French Legion of Honour.
The collection of items from the estate of Seiji Ozawa is just as impressive as Galle, including recordings, his podium, a conductor?s wand marked ?Saito Kinen Orchestra Carnegie Hall- The Essex House A Classic Combination.
